Hello,

I´m from Germany and my favorite book is Mine to Possess. I have read it so often that the book is in danger to break into loose pages.
So I bought the German edition Im Feuer der Nacht. After reading I have mixed feelings. So I have a few questions for the readers who read both books, too.

My impression of the translation is that it was done in a hurry. The violence scenes (Orrin) were tuned down. Some sentences seems to be translated word for word.
Sometimes the content of sentences changed through the wrong position of one word (or my interpretation is wrong)

example

MtP p.109 Talin to Clay: I haven´t chosen to share a man´s bed in eight years.

IFdN p. 149 Acht Jahre lang bin ich nicht aus freien Stücken zu einem Mann ins Bett gestiegen.

My interpretation of the german text: For eight years i wasn´t freely in a bed with a men.
In my opinion it implies she was forced to be in a bed with a men.

Any other opinions?

Merle

p.s. my writing skill in english is a little bit rusty, so sorry for typos and wrong grammar comparing Mine to possess with Im Feuer der Nacht Icon_redface

You're not the first to say that the german translations are poorly done. Someone else reported that the german version of Caressed by Ice was messed up as well.

The german translations are poorly done. I personally decided to read the books only in english. It´s better. I´ve read Blaze of Memory in english first and now in german ( i could read already because an acquaintance of my parents works at the publishing company). I think it´s also a poorly done translation. It´s better to read in english.

I think its a shame that Germans who can't read English are missing out on how great the books really are.

Edit: I just sent Nalini an email to let her know.

I am from Germany and I also prefer the original. I also shudder while reading some of my favorite passages in german. Nevertheless I still buy the german version.

Of course: original never equals translation.

But: I also believe that it is often impossible to translate certain expressions from english to german, simply because there are no or not the right words for it in my mother tongue.
"Mate", for example, has a very extensive and profound meaning in Nalinis books. The expression "mate" is typical for pack-relations and means certainly more than the german translation "Gefährte/in". If you try to translate "Gefährte/in" you usually get "partner". "Partner" doesn't equal the real meaning of "Mate"...but there's no other or better choice I can think of.
The translations of Nalinis books (in german) have their weaknesses - but I've also read worse translations or really inappropriate ones - for example the translations of Sherrilyn Kenyons Dark Hunter series.

I think its a shame that Germans who can't read English are missing out on how great the books really are.
I do not think it's that bad. Smile
Nalinis books are translated fairly quickly by the german publisher "Lyx Verlag". You can find them (easily!) in german bookshops or german online shops.
This proves IMHO that Nalini writes extraordinary stories and that her stories are powerfull, even in translation. Wink
