World Building for the Guild Hunter Series Empty World Building for the Guild Hunter Series

Post by BrokeStudent#23 Tue May 08, 2012 7:22 pm

Hello, I'm Broke, and welcome to my little corner of weirdness. Right now I'm just going to ask question and hopefully hear back from you all. What will these questions be about? The world of the Guild Hunter series, specifically, what might have happened during pivotal points in history. Here's an example of a question, and my own answer:

What do you think happened in World War II? Did the angels and vampires get involved, or did they just let the humans duke it out?

World War II depended on a lot of factors, including the economic depressions that were running rampant through out Europe at the time. It's doubtful that Michaela would have helped the common people even during such strenuous times, but if/when Hitler really started kicking up a fuss, it's entirely possible that she would have had to do SOMETHING. As to what that might have been, I'm not sure, but when millions start dying due to war and planned genocide, that tends to grab people's attention.

Another point where they might have gotten involved was when the Manhattan Project was kicking up. It's very doubtful that Raphael wouldn't have caught wind of it, and when he figured out the humans were making a super weapon...well, it would've been shut down, period. However, the only alternative other than the bomb for the Americans was Operation Downfall, a planned invasion of Japan that could have extended WWII another five years, if not longer. Add another projected few million casualties to both sides during the course of the operation, and I think both Raphael and Lijuan would have put their foot down and forced a peace treaty.

In the end, the war might not have lasted as long, but I bet it would have been quite different. No nukes, which means the Cold War may or may not have happened. At the very least, it wouldn't have been quite as tense during those decades. It's debatable whether or not nuclear science itself would have been shut down by the angels, but it'd definitely be regulated so no super weaponry would be made behind their backs. Basically, things could be pretty different.

Note : You reply DOES NOT have to be this long. I just made this monster because this is what I do for fun. Simpler replies are quite welcome, and I'm interested in hearing any thoughts you may have on future subjects! Now, for the first set of questions:

1. My example question; How do you think World War I or II might have worked out? Did the angels and vampires interfere, or just let the humans fight it out?

2. What do you think about the chances of any national space programs existing in the Hunter series? Sarah once said that Michaela wouldn't have minded setting back the clock a few millennia to the time where angels were worshiped as gods. Would certain paths of technology be blocked by the angels?

3. A potential touchy subject, but one I'm really curious about: Do any of the major religions we have today even exist in the Hunter series? Not just the major monotheistic religions, though this would be the most affected one as Judeo-Christian texts talk a lot about angels. But polytheistic religions like Hinduism and paganism could have been affected or influenced by angels in the ancient past. Would our religions still be present, independent of the existence of angels, or would religions in the Hunter series be near unrecognizable by us?

Please be civil and courteous to others while discussing here. I'm looking for conversation and friendly debate, not arguments and flame wars. Thanks for indulging me, and have fun!

World Building for the Guild Hunter Series Empty Re: World Building for the Guild Hunter Series

Welcome Broke, I think I know who you are. I'm the author of Angel's Science and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you're one of my recent reviewers. Now to the matter at hand. =) As this is a paranormal, alternate-dimension romantic storyline, I think the chances of us ever seeing explanations to these questions within subsequent books will be rare. I would say the only time I remember that Nalini has ever given us a true historical reference in her stories was during Archangel's Consort. The following was found on page 285.

"What is this place?"

"The jewel in my mother's crown. Though it is far from where it should be."

"You know, most archeologists believe Amanat never existed," she said, staggered by the awareness of just how much power it would've taken to not only disappear , but move an entire city. "That it is nothing more than a legend."

A faint smile on Raphael's face that didn't reach his eyes. "I wonder at human archeologists who do not speak to those of us who lived in these times of legend."

Elena snorted, "As if any of you angels would answer their questions."

You know us too well, Elena.

That being said, it'd still be fun to simply banter about it! =)

1)I can't really go with a yes or no answer as to whether or not WWII happened. But, I'm going to use a reference I heard when I saw the Avengers movie over the weekend. Nick Fury said, "We have no quarrel with you." And Loki's response was, "Does an ant, have a quarrel with a boot?" And that's the best way to describe the vibe I get from most of the archangels. We know they pick from the human pool, they make vampires and concentrate on making their lives miserable. Does that mean that they would not interfere in the lives of humans if they thought they were getting out of hand? Of course not. Dmitri's story is probably the best example, Isis wanted him, so she took him out of spite, destroyed what was dear to him. Now, we can argue that she did this solely due to the grudge she held against Raphael. It only stresses the fact that humans are mere pawns simply caught in the middle of the games the angels play against each other. I would say mostly, that they would have interfered in WWII if they were bored and used the excuse of an affront to their territory.

2) Judging from what we've read so far, many technological advancements have already happened in the Guild Hunter universe and considering that most actually benefit the angels and their vampires, it would behoove them to stand in the way of progress. Angels may be the one constant in the Guild Hunter world but the last thing they'd do is let humans leave them behind technologically. The following was taken from the beginning of Sarah's book;

No one -- human or vampire -- would dare trespass on angelic territory, but even had they felt the need to give in to the suicidal urge, it would have proved impossible. The keep had been built by angels, wings a prerequisite for access. Technology could have negated that advantage, but the angels didn't survive eons by being left behind. The air above and around the keep was strictly controlled, both by a complex intrusion detection system and by units of highly trained angels.

I know not all of them embraced technology. I think it may have been mentioned that Lijuan shunned such conveniences like a phone, which is why Raphael could not simply call her the first time he went into the Quiet. If all the angels want is to be worshipped, there are enough people out there that still go 'angel-struck' over them. And the fact that the angel dust sells for a mint is also pretty telling. That would not be a solid enough reason to block progress in my opinion, because the benefits of allowing humans to be creative far out weighs any negative impact. Take for example, Jessamy's book. It was revealed that the trip from New York to the Refuge was flown by the angels and was a long hard flight, and their vampires had to take part barge part angel ride to get there. During Elena's time, clearly Raphael used a jet to travel back and forth to the Refuge. My point is, why would they interfere with the space program not knowing how it would benefit them in the long run? Perhaps one day we'll go to Mars and build outposts there, am certain angels will want their piece of the pie. And what would be the advantage of halting this type of progress? Fear that aliens may get wind of us and come attack Earth? If that were the case I would feel sorry for any vengeful aliens planning to invade Nalini's Earth with all the powerful immortals that reside there. =p

3)As for religion, I'm not sure where it was mentioned but apparently people in the Guild Hunter series used to think angels were what we think they are today. So what I'm trying to figure out is when did that thinking change. Were the angel's not always as violent as they are in Guild Hunter today. I believe it was referenced in Galen's book, that Jessamy was not to be seen in the human world because of her deformity. And I'm paraphrasing here, but the idea was, that if humans saw what appeared to be a weak angel and got the idea that they could perhaps hold their own against them, millions would die and the world would drown in blood. When I find the correct page where this was mentioned, I will edit this post to add it. But overall, I think that's my three cents. =p

Also, I don't think you have to worry about this community getting heated over debates. I know I've only been here half a year but everyone seems to be very courteous and the moderators are friendly. I can think of some gaming forums where that is not the case.

World Building for the Guild Hunter Series Empty Re: World Building for the Guild Hunter Series

Post by BrokeStudent#23 Wed May 09, 2012 6:20 pm

Yup, that's me. Smile Took me a bit to find this place, but find it I did. And now, to the fun!

1. You have a fair point. I just have a difficult time conceptualizing beings like archangels because, well, we don't have anything like them on Earth. So, I try to just be logical and apply Occam's Razor when it comes to their actions and possible motivations, at least surface motivations and such.

The reason I focused so much on World War II in my discussion is because of the sheer scope of the war, and how many it affected. The war killed tens of millions, and the world saw casualties it wasn't really prepared to deal with, even after the first World War. Had things worked out the same way they did here, I think it would have sent the angels and older vamps in for quite the loop. A thousand, ten thousand people dead? They don't really care. Ten million though? I don't think they're used to that kind of destruction. I already went over the whole nuke thing, so no need to rehash that.

2. I'm not saying all angels and vamps would be against the idea of expansion into space. I'm sure some of them are quite aware of the fact that Earth simply can't sustain it's expanding population for the next two or three centuries, so something has to be done. But there are angels who are rather inflexible, and for the really old ones, change doesn't come easy to them. Just look at Alexander. He knew the world was moving on without him, so he took the only option he had at the time and decided to Sleep. But he took a passive route when he came to this problem. It's entirely possible that others wouldn't be so accepting of rapid change, such as the kind we're going through here in the 21st century. Angels, like normal humans, aren't always rational when confronted with something their not sure on how to handle.

3. I know what scene you're referencing to. I'm reading that book now. Smile But anyway, something that makes me wonder is if Christianity/Catholicism doesn't exist, then what kind of calendar do they go by? Just a little thing that had me scratching my head.

As for what might have had people changing their minds about angels...science marches on. Once humans got out of the Dark Ages and probably into the 18th or 19th century, I think people would've slowly stopped being totally superstitious about angels and make an attempt to study them. They probably got next to nothing, but it might have been enough for them to show that no, angels are not celestial beings from on high. Now whether people believed that or not is a different story.

Good to know, I was just hoping that none of my questions would start a nasty fight or offend someone.

I think I'll have to re-read certain parts of Angel's Dance because I didn't truly get what Alexander's problems were. I liked him during Jessamy's flash backs, he seemed cool he actually laughed. And we know what a small percentage of archangel's laugh genuinely. I felt like I was missing something as to his antagonism towards Raphael. As you'd mentioned, was change truly his problem? Did he think that Raphael was too young to be part of the Cadre or that he should not have claimed such a large territory? I'm not sure if it was ever actually spelled out to us.

But, changing gears a little bit, I'm going to let you in on what I first thought about when it came to the differences of our world vs Guild Hunter. We know there are television anchors and supermodels as well as movie and music stars. My first thoughts were, does Britney Spears exist in Nalini's world or someone similar to her, and do they tour?! The reason this even came onto my radar was because of Charisemnon. Raphael had described himself as not being like the archangel Charisemnon in that he would not take a woman simply because she caught his interest. How would that work if an American singer was touring his territory? I sort of figure that any woman in North Africa is fair game to Charisemnon, so what do women in the rest of the world do, avoid his territory like the plague as a result? I really can't see there being some sort of agreement where Charisemnon is not to touch people who are strictly visiting.

Now Britney Spears was just an example, I'm not saying that Charisemnon would desire someone like her. But consider the amount of people that would travel to other countries due to work, how do they avoid being snatched up by someone like Charisemnon? Oh well, i suppose I'll have to ask Nalini the next time she does a Q&A.

Okay you guys wrote such awesome things...but I guess this is my really small piece of the pie.

Also Hi Brooke

1.) As for WWI and WWII, I think the angels, the Cadre especially, may have decided not to intervene unless it affected angels or vampires in a drastic way. Vampires may have been a little less hesitant to help specifically the young ones because they might have family around or ties to their humanity.

2. Possibly some types of technology. Like maybe anything that threatened angels and perhaps the vampires if became to big a deal or danger to them. Hopefully you get the theme.

3. Well religion, I think angels might have influenced some, which some? I have no idea. So yeah

Umm, I have llike a point that I would like to hear somone else's thoughts about?

What would happen if humans realized that the angels needed them?

You know what Shelita, that's a fantastic question that I never even thought about. I think the other question would be, if the angels couldn't release this toxin that formed in their blood through the Making process, what would happen? Would they all descend into the blood-born state like Uram, or would it actually kill some of them? I mean, even if they did survive, their human-less world would be in utter chaos.

At this point I feel that even if the humans did know, they would still go through with the Making process, possibly seeing it as a symbiotic relationship. There is a benefit for both, the angels don't go blood-born and the humans gain immortality. But if they were at least aware of it then maybe it would increase future political agendas and give humans a bargaining chip on the table. Either way, it would grant them a say that I'm sure the angels would never want them to have.

I don't know if he had a problem with Raphael per-se...if you recall, the only reason there was major tension between the two terrritories was because Alexander's son had taken over and was looking to pick a fight. Or are you talking about an earlier conflict?

That...is a very good point. It's quite possible that thanks to Charisemnon, Africa's very insular. How this effects the way the continent works is up for a lot of speculation. Hrm...I'll have to think on this.

SHELITA wrote: Okay you guys wrote such awesome things...but I guess this is my really small piece of the pie.

Also Hi Brooke

Hello, glad to see people joining in! Please don't be intimidated by these walls of text, it should pitter out a bit when we get the ball well and truly rolling.

1. I find my self rather inclined to agree with you. The vampiric and angelic societies are pretty self contained, so it'd take something big to get all three culture's attention. I do wonder how vampires might have affected the war...Oh dear God. No HellsingxGuild Hunter crossovers please. pale (Damn my inner crossover fan!)

2. Which is why I'm quite convinced that the nuke doesn't exist in the GH universe. Can you imagine what radiation would do to an angel or an older vampire? Radiation + regeneration = very nasty cancers. (shudder)

3. I get the impression that Neha for example influenced Hinduism to a point, though how strongly said influence is hard to say without any solid information.

As for that last question...I see that going a couple of ways. Optimistically, it gives the humans a leg up in terms of negotiation with angels, and you get a little more information of all three species being traded freely around the world. Not much mind you, but a little can wind up going a long way in the long term. Pessimistically, humans get aggressive, trying to force better relations with the angels by holding back those who want to make contracts. Naturally, this won't end well. I can see a lot of people getting killed and getting their minds wiped. It's hard to say though. People as individuals can be smart and predictable. People in groups...hoh boy.

SHELITA wrote:I also wonder what happened when they used animals from purging, maybe that's where werewolves came from.

I honestly don't recall if purging the toxins via animals was successful or not. I was talking about a similar subject with a friend last night, and she said that the angels needed humans precisely because such methods just didn't work. I'm gonna have to re-read the books again...

I think that Alexander had some sort of issue with Raphael that I believe Rohan was going to follow through with. But like you'd mentioned earlier, Alexander chose the easy way out and decided to simply sleep. We have no idea what if any orders he gave to Rohan at that point, who had raised an army in order to challenge Raphael. But it seemed that after his father went to sleep, Rohan then decided that he was going to claim Alexander's territory as his own which he couldn't do because he was not an archangel. It may have been mentioned somewhere that other archangel's stepped in, because I don't think Raphael had to get involved directly.

What I'm curious about, is that Alexander was the archangel of Persia, did that seat remain empty until Favashi was assigned it possibly centuries later? Nalini did answer a question pertaining to this on her blog that did help to shed a bit of light for me on the whole territory acquirement process.

4. When an angel becomes an Archangel how does that new person gain a territory? Do they have to fight or does the Cadre meet and realign boundaries?

The latter. It's part of the angelic "political system" so to speak, that a new archangel is assigned territory and given a certain period of time to settle in (approx a hundred years) before any of the other archangels can challenge him or her.

This would mean that what Rohan was trying to pull off had a snowball's chance in hell of ever succeeding. I suppose this whole thing bothers me because of what it would mean for Alexander's character. He would appear almost petty if the only reason he had a problem with Raphael was just because. But maybe that's why he chose sleep, and he became the better man for it.

There are some great questions and issues raised in this thread!

Brokestudent, a few people here are going to one of Nalini's appearances in Germany in early June so maybe we could add to that list of questions they are gathering (?) It's in the Love Letter Convention thread I think in the "General" forum. It'd be great to ask Nalini how parallel her GH universe is with our history, have there been world wars, how do humans travel between archangel's territory without fear of being kidnapped, will humans ever find out how necessary they are to the angels, etc.

Sorry this has taken so long, it's been busy over here. I'll be gone over the weekend as well, so heads up on that.

I was under the impression that he was the archangel of Europe at the time, as when the tension died down, the question of who was going to take his realm was brought up. Jessamy's first response was Michaela, as she was nearing the crossover threshold separating normal angels from the archs. Since Europe is her current territory, and I don't recall any mentions of territory getting shifted around...but I could be wrong.

I also have no real idea as to why Alexander chose to sleep. I just extrapolated from his conversation with Jessamy that he knew the world was changing, knew that he couldn't keep up anymore, and so decided to separate himself from that changing world for both it's safety, and perhaps his own. (Mentally if not physically.)

Germany? Aw man, no way I can make it. I'm on the West Coast of the State for crying out loud...

And you want to use these question?! I can't speak for Concepcion30 or SHELITA, but feel more than free to use mine! Just tell me the answers when you get them! Very Happy

Okay...I have another question?

What would happen if Alexander woke up and the angel the Cadre suspects to soon be an archangel becomes an archangel? Is there like a certain amount of archangels allowed.

I can't go to Germany, I can't even drive legally yet Sad But hopefully someone can.

SHELITA wrote:Okay...I have another question?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I don't think there is a limit as to how many archangel's can be current at any given time. I'm not sure in which book this was stated but I'd read, "To be an Archangel was to be Cadre." Meaning, even if there were already 10 members on the Cadre but another angel became an archangel, then there would now be eleven members. If you look at the world map and you compare the known territory that is already claimed by the current Cadre, there is still plenty of land out there. That perhaps even if more sleeping archangel's awoke, they could just find new territory. But who is to say that other sleepers didn't go the same route as Raphael's mother. Caliane not only took her people to sleep with her, but her entire territory as well. So when she awoke, Amanat was right there ready for her.

After I read Jessamy's book I was kind of hoping that Alexander would awaken as well. I don't think there is any rule as to how long an archangel will remain asleep. But I'm going to say that Caliane had been sleeping for a lot longer than 400 years, which is the time frame that Alexander has been gone. I'm just wondering if it would be considered unprecedented if two sleepers awoke in the same century. And speaking of which, what are the odds of Raphael and several of his Seven falling in love in the same century as well? Apparently quite likely as that happens to be the current time frame of the Guild Hunter series. Razz It seems only Illium and Galen had true loves in the past, that we know about at least. I'm thinking something may be up with Nassir, but he's the least documented of the Seven so there is no way to know his deal yet.

Anyways, I would be totally on board with Alexander re-awakening. And perhaps the antagonism between him and Raphael will still exist to this day. Nothing like a little drama to spice things up, oh and romance as well.

That's a good scenario to think about...

I wonder if Caliane is still mad. If Alexander does wake..Who would be older, him or Caliane?

We've already established that Caliane is older than Lijuan.

Concepcion, I know Illium had someone he loved in the past but Galen? Are you speaking of Jessamy but she's also his present/current love.

Yes, I was referring to Jessamy. Since their love story began four hundred years ago, I consider that a past storyline/relationship despite the fact that it is still current. But my point was, Raphael, Dmitri and now Jason are all going to find love within the space of what? A few years? When they'd been alive for centuries and apparently hadn't met 'the one' before now. I know we can make a case for Dmitri's love also having been in the past, but he essentially moved on when he believed Ingrede to be dead. Therefore if he'd truly wanted to find someone else before the current Guild Hunter century arc he could of. Who is to say that he hadn't missed past incarnations of Ingrede that came before Honor?

I totally get Nalini's reason for putting the relationships so close together. The last thing we need is for Elena's human family and friends to have already died off, thus making the storyline less interesting. hehe.

World Building for the Guild Hunter Series Empty Re: World Building for the Guild Hunter Series

It's a problem for a lot of these long running series. All these ancient males have been alone FOREVER and then WHAM they all find their true loves within a couple years. Kind of humorous but I'll go with it. (At least in Kresley Cole's IAD she provides a reason for it - it's part of what usually happens when an Ascenion is forthcoming.)

I'm certain they've all had lovers in the past. Maybe even some long-term ones. Raphael had told Elena when he first met her that his lovers had all been warrior women. I wouldn't really see Dmitri keeping a regular, but maybe Jason could have. But apparently these past women clearly didn't have the za za zoom, that their current women do.

And Shelita, with the information we've been provided I think Alexander is older than Caliane. When Caliane first woke, I remember Raphael asked her if she was sane, and her response was something like - are we ever truly sane? We're going to assume that right now she's behaving herself, at least during the time frame of Dmitri and Jason's book. But since we know that Elena and Raphael are getting the book after Jason's, it's quite likely Caliane will be stirring stuff up again.

I think the excerpt said something like when Jason wanted a woman, he had a woman which kind of implies he was a one-night stand kind of guy. I'd expect it would be different for each of them. I saw Dmitri as definitely a one-night stand kind of guy, with the exception of his short term thing with Favashi (spelling?). Raphael seems more along the lines of keeping someone a while until he got bored or they began to demand more of a commitment in which case he'd cut them loose. I guess we'll learn more about each of their previous love lives when they each get their book. Poor Aodhan is likely to haven't touched anyone in centuries.

Lulu, I think we've chain replied in a previous topic before, we seem to have that down pact. Razz I hope Broke won't mind that we're going off topic a little bit, but this conversation is really awesome.

You know, now that I think about it, you're right, Jason is probably more into one-night stands. I actually briefly forgot about Dmitri's fling with Favashi, but I'm going to say he never truly loved her as his current animosity towards her would attest. And I'm going to let you in on something. I had hoped that Nalini would write a little excerpt depicting Raphael and one of his previous warrior women. Be it an angel or a vampire, we know he had very few human lovers. And while we love Elena and wouldn't trade her for anything in the world, it would just be really interesting to read something like that. Just my opinion. Until next time. Very Happy

I'll try not to stalk you across the forum! Very Happy Raphael was/is pretty cold, except with our Elena. I think his previous relationships with lovers were all about the physical release so I don't know if a scene with one of them would reveal much about Raphael as I don't think that Raphael would reveal anything. Now, Venom, his past and his past loves (if there are any) really intrigue me.

To answer this yes, there is religion in the universe. Ellie's bith mother was a Voodoo follower, and her Dad is Catholic.
