My favorite couple would have to be Sascha and Lucas. I really love their relationship and the fact that we can really see it develop throughout the series. They're the couple that got me addicted to the series, being the first and all. After Sas-Luc, I'd have to go with Bren-Judd, followed very closely by Tammy-Nate.

Tammy & Nate. Though their own story has been short Crying or Very sad , it's a very sweet story.

Greetings to all. I'm new here and this is my first post. cheers

DEFINITELY Brenna and Judd for me! Followed closely by Faith and Vaughn. Other than those, I don't think I can rank the others, except I never really liked Clay and Tally's story, though (I guess I just don't like Talin).

Favorite Couple (psy-cha series) Empty Re: Favorite Couple (psy-cha series)

Post by droplet Sun Jul 12, 2009 6:56 pm

Before I answer your question, Katherine, I just want to say ahead of time that I don't mean this to be a post where I just insult Talin or make myself seem bitter or anything - I just have to explain my reasoning in such a way that it's clear I haven't just jumped to conclusions about her or judged her to quickly.

Ok. The reason I don't really like Talin is because to me, she's too much of a 'victim' and feels too sorry for herself. I feel horrible about everything that happened to her in childhood, especially with Orrin, and I can understand why as a child she was traumatized and ran from Clay and from her fears about him maybe hurting her. In fact, that's probably the most common reaction a child would have, and her mind wasn't able to deal with the brutality. However, the thing I do not like about what she did was that she let those memories affect her to much and continued to run as an adult. In CbI, Brenna was also abused mentally and physically, but she wouldn't accept herself as anything less than beautiful and funtional and didn't feel sorry for herself but helped herself heal. Of course, she was an adult when it happened, and she had Pack to help her, but it was her inner strength which wouldn't let her give up. That was different for Talin, as she was a child, but she grew up. And, as an adult, one can look back on childhood memories (such as that of Clay killing Orrin) more objectively (though not totally, I know). Adults are also more empathetic, and can see the same situation from others' perspectives and therefore understand other people's motivations, unlike children. In this sense, Talin would be able to see that Clay killed Orrin to protect her - and that that level of protectiveness would make Clay kill himself before he ever hurt her. Yet later, Talin is still afraid of Clay hurting her. Her fear also has to do with the fact that she doesn't know him now, but that is only because she asked the authorities to tell Clay that she was dead. Even that I can understand, because she was still young (I think it was 12), but the part I blame her for is that she never bothered to even try to look for Clay after she had grown up until she needed something from him. She says that she missed him every day - of course she would, and I feel bad about that when she was young, but she's been a woman for a long time and never made any effort to look for him. Then, when she does come to him, she wants him to be the same as he was when he was younger. She wants their relationship to be the same way, but by having those expectations, it seems like she's being selfish because she's disregarding circumstances which changed him and not accepting change in him when she is in herself. I also don't like how she acts jealous of other women around Clay (like Rina and Faith) because even when she tells Clay yes to being first friends and then lovers, she still doesn't give all of herself to him even though she knows he's hers, body and soul. That made me feel like she didn't have the right to be possesive of Clay when she was shortchanging him at the same time - she was holding on to him because she loved him and he loved her and she needed to feel that love, but she was also protecting herself at the same time, which seemed sort of...weak, I guess. To me, all of that seemed extremely unfair to Clay who really, when you look at it, didn't do anything wrong (even killing Orrin was part of who he is - changeling).

Despite all that, however, I think Nalini did an excellent job of writing this story. And I liked how as the story progressed, Talin got "more spine" and used her "smart mouth" more often, as Clay would say. I especially liked the part in DarkRiver HQ when she talked about Clay's 'problems'. Anyways, those are just my thoughts, and I know many people disagree, but I can't help what I feel. It may help to know that I grew more fond of her after reading MtP again, or it may not, and I hope I come to like her more, but she'll never be my favourite.

Favorite Couple (psy-cha series) Empty Re: Favorite Couple (psy-cha series)

I sorta thought that might be the case. Believe it or not though, Nalini nailed Talin's adulthood behavior. Children who are abused often grow into adults who see themselves as their abusers described them. Talin's first social worker told her that she was a worthless human being. Orin reinforced this opinion by abusing her and saying she deserved it and wasn't good for anything else. And then, just to top it off, she watches as Clay tears Orrin apart in a killing rage.

As a result, Talin grew up into a person who saw herself as worthless and unworthy of Clay's sacrifice. She didn't want Clay to see her because she believed that he wouldn't like her anymore. She expected him to reject (and maybe even despise) her as a person.

Then Jon went missing and she knew that if he wasn't found soon, he would be killed like Mickey. She was willing to do anything in order to prevent that from happening and that 'anything' included going to Clay (the man she feared more than any other) for help.

As for why she was afraid: It wasn't just the fear of rejection, she was also scared of his anger. After all, the last time she saw him angry, someone ended up dead, and there he was seriously ticked off at her. It wasn't rational but fears are like that. I'm sure everybody here has had something happen to them that made you scared of doing anything that might cause that event to reoccur.

Yes, that's true. I think that mostly, I guess I was sad for Talin because of the image she has of herself - and you're right, it's difficult to change that image when it has been reinforced since one was very young. Emotions are not things which can always be reasoned away or changed logically - even if one recognizes the fact that it is not logical, one still can't help feeling the way they do.

Pity,Talin is such a complicated intriguing character.I really like that Nalini chose such a past for them. Not easy, not sweet... but still, they're together, sometimes I do believe that their connection and feelings might be called even stronger. So yes,I do like this couple. And the second ones are B&J,well my dear,Judd is one of a kind.Damn... Smile

Judd and Brenna. his transformation was breathtaking - from cold determined psy to warm, giving lover.
amazing.

like others, i've re-read their story many times.

after that - Dev and Katya.
all of the other couples stories are also amazing but those two books are the ones that stand out the most for me.

All time favorite: JUDD AND BRENNA! Then it's a tie between Tammy & Nate and Riley & Mercy. And then Faith & Vaughn. And then Sascha and Lucas. Not a big fan of Talin.

Droplet, I agree 100% on everything u said. ITS EXCATLY how I feel about Talin. I know a lot of girls who've been abused just like Talin's character....but for some reason...all those girls had way more spine than Talin. Talin....ehhh...I don't hate her....but there is no way I'll ever like her. I'll just leave it at that. THOUGH, Clay is def. on my maxim-hot-meter! =]
