I grew up reading my dad's books, this meant Robert Ludlum, Robin Cook and Stephen King. But when I moved to romance, no one batted an eye, until one of my cousins asked if I'm reading romance for the sex scenes. lol
I was paranoid about the covers from that day until I got fed up hiding.^^;

I wish the U.S. covers weren't quite so lurid and the titles too . . . . it can be a little embarassing at times. A kindle is on my wish list for that reason alone.

In German they´re are even worse though...

When I'm reading a Psy/Changleling book and someone asks me what I'm reading I either say Urban Fantasy (which is a stretch) or a shortened non-porn sounding name.

Visions of Heat became "Visions"
Caressed by Ice became "Ice"
Kiss of Snow became "Snow"
etc.

yeah the titles, another reason to sometimes hide the books
if somebody asks what the books are about I simply say: Changeling and another human race called psy, very interesting, most people don´t ask further

So.. why be ashamed?

As I've said before (I think oô), it's not really about shame. : / Although I will admit that sometimes I am ashamed.

But nah, that's not the main reason. I'm just too .. exhausted to tell people what I read and I care too much about our relationships, my image, and their image. If they'd say something like "Urh, vampires. Blah blah you're stupid reading this shit blah I read good stuff like inTouch blah"

I'd think worse of them. I can't help it. I hate it about myself but if people who are actually close to me start saying shit like that and assume that because I read books that also include supernatural beings and romance I'm not the person they thought I am then it bothers me and I start a fight and afterwards I'm too exhausted to sort things out.

It's like.. with children. I don't know if you're a mother or a sister or an aunt. But you probably know that:

If a child wants something you have to ask yourself: "Am I strong enough to say no even if there IS a discussion, 3 hours long temper tantrum, declarations of neverending hate etc?" because in this case saying no and later saying yes because you're too stressed and burned out would teach the child something wrong. It's just the way it is. Yeah, it's bad that sometimes you'll allow your children to watch an episode of Spongebob Squarepants, but it's better than showing them inconsistency.

Friends and family are a little like children: You have to ask yourself: Do I have the willpower to explain myself if I feel like I need to? And in my case, I always feel the need to explain myself and I never have the willpower to explain myself.

At least that's a little what it is like with me. There are other things and mostly I'm just lazy, but bleh, you know? I care and I'd even care if the others wouldn't. My sister doesn't care at all, and I would still feel the need to explain why I read PNR and probably call the whole thing UF. XD

I cared once... but honestly, at some point just got so fed up with it... don´t care anymore.

"Suck it up and leave me alone." works perfectly well.

I follow a simple mantra when it comes to my guilty pleasures.

Those who matter won't mind, and those who mind don't matter.

I don't know who made that quote...but yeah.

I still care what people, specially the ones important to me, think of me.
And it will hurt if they will think poorly of me. However, I must also think of what I want, I cannot limit myself based on what others expect from me.
If there are going to be boundaries, it should be ones that I have placed. My upbringing, people around me will influence what I do, yes. But ultimately, I have to be responsible for my own happiness and contentment. :3

In other words, my loved ones' opinions matter to me, but I cannot let them dictate how I'll handle my life. I'll only resent them and resent myself.^^

Besides, guilty pleasures are just one aspect of our lives.
There are other things they should be more worried about, like if I'm a budding psychopath or something.
